An obsessive love affair with paint

Text by Annelies A.A. Vanbelle (Art Journalist & Copywriter)

Karien Deroo likes to be in her studio. She is so passionately in love with the material and the color of paint that she prefers to reside in this place, where she is surrounded by the things that feed her monomaniac obsession: tubes of oil paint, sophisticated color palettes, bouquets of brushes, easels in different sizes, books about contemporary and old masters, canvases that await adequate continuation and music that directs the rhythm of her process.

Her preferred medium is oil paint. Acryl does not suit this autodidact, former graphic designer and illustrator, who has extensively studied the old masters. It is like candlelight versus fluorescent light, she says. The slowness of the medium, the creamy texture, the odour, the kneading and smearing, the transparent versus the opaque and the buttery in between: these are tactile, almost erotic sensations that steer and sustain her love affair.

For three years she worked secretly in her studio, before presenting her paintings for the first time in 2011. Finally she dared to do to what she always wanted to do and what she was made for. In the beginning she was still strongly committed to realistic figuration, but more and more she allowed freedom in her way of painting and welcomed flexibility, a desire to let the brushes determine the dance on the canvas, to let the colours rule. Dark in confrontation with light, warm in addition to cold, and sometimes naughty excesses such as candy pink or shameless ultramarine. Through her landscapes she learns to let go more in her portraits and to let the paint prevail.

She always starts with the eyes. The gaze is the focal point of every work. Carefully she builds around this. With daring colour strokes and spots, she explores how far she can go in abstracting the curves of a face. She flirts with the edges of reality, with splashes, smears and drippings. Her figures always become so much more than the literal expression of a human face or an outlined shape. It is as if the feelings force themselves on, and direct the artist from within, from the soul of a work, to unexpected movements. What you get as a result is a hybrid image, half carefully worked out, half beautifully derailed – the tangible and the unworldly at a glance. The creatures of Karien Deroo are Janus heads, who unite control and uncontrolledness in themselves.

Although they are always somewhat disturbing and seem to languish in a realm of Unheimlichkeit, the emotion does not splash open in your face. It is muted pathos, it are wuthering heights with a misty filter, it is subdued romance. One by one her paintings breathe the human deficit, although it is impossible to detect where exactly it is located. Do we see sadness? Or is it fear? Or disillusion? In any case, it seems like a failed search for beacons, a fruitless quest for solid ground or nest heat.

Just as Deroo relies on film stills for her paintings, the final works are snapshots. They hold still on the moment it becomes clear that redemption is not coming, just before or just after the big scream. Each of her characters looks like a castaway on a wild sea, realizing that a rescue is not immediately in sight and may never come. Apparently frozen in an affective no man’s land, that’s how they stare at us. It is sometimes said that my works in a way are self-portraits, the artist tells me, not without hesitation. As if she knows that this melancholy comes from somewhere, but that does not necessarily have to be made explicit.

What comforts a covert melancholic? The gift of beauty, always and everywhere available, to enjoy endlessly. In her painting practice Deroo finds a reliable partner who is always present, even in the darkest hours, who never disappoints and never bores. Paint as a delicate, stimulating ally, a passion that can be experienced even in supreme silence and isolated concentration.

Een obsessieve liefdesrelatie met de verf

Tekst door Annelies A.A. Vanbelle (Kunstjournalist & Copywriter)

Haar geprefereerde medium is olieverf.
